Paul Eases Past Kudla

Australian Open semifinalist Tommy Paul is off to a good start in Delray Beach. The second seed, who received a first-round bye, began his campaign with a straight sets win over fellow American Denis Kudla in the round of 16.

After both players traded a break in the middle of the first set, Paul finished the set by winning three consecutive games. He broke Kudla in the very first game of the second set and then maintained that advantage through the end of the contest for a 6-3, 6-4 victory.

Paul, who began the year at no. 35, broke into the top 20 for the first time in his career following that run in the first major of the season.

The 25-year-old is currently sitting on a career-high ranking of no. 18 and on verge of matching his best ever result at Delray Beach Open. Last year, Paul had made it to the semifinals of the tournament for the first time before being beaten by eventual champion Cameron Norrie.

Paul is off to an 8-2 start this season. He won one and lost one in Adelaide-2 before reaching his maiden Grand Slam semifinal in Melbourne. It was a massive achievement for the American, who had reached the fourth round just once before at a major.

He also played a Davis Cup singles match just before the Delray Beach Open, winning it in straight sets against Uzbekistan.

Albot Dumps Out Vukic

Facing Paul will be world no. 113 Radu Albot. The 33-year-old Moldovan, who won his only ATP title in Delray Beach in 2019, ousted Australia’s Aleksandar Vukic 6-4, 6-4 in the second round on Thursday.

Albot built a 5-2 lead in the opening set thanks to a double break. Vukic could pull one break back but not the other allowing Albot to take a one-set-to-love lead.

In the second set, Albot got a break in the fifth game. He then saved a break point in the final game before converting a fourth match point for a straight sets win. Albot converted 3 of 9 break points and saved 6 of 7 during the match.

He had earlier beaten Fernando Verdasco 7-6, 7-6 in the opening round of the tournament.

The Moldovan is now 7-4 in Delray Beach and he improved to 5-5 across levels in 2023. After losing his first three matches of the season in Pune, the Australian Open qualifiers and the Tenerife Challenger, he made it to the quarterfinals in Quimper Challenger and then reached the second round in Dallas.

Paul v Albot Prediction and Tip

Paul has been in excellent form this year and he has been rewarded with a move up in the rankings. He looked comfortable in his round of 16 victory as well and so he will be the favourite to win the quarterfinal and reach the final four for the second time in Delray Beach.
