Cerundolo Routs Munar

2021 Buenos Aires finalist Francesco Cerundolo handed Jaume Munar a straight sets shellacking in the second round on Thursday to advance to a third straight quarterfinal in the ATP 250 event.

While he was denied the title by Diego Schwartzman in 2021, he was stopped by the same opponent in the last eight stage last year.

Cerundolo won’t face Schwartzman this year as his quarterfinal opponent accounted for the fourth seed in the round of 16.

Ranked no. 30 in the world, Cerundolo had a tough start to this year’s Buenos Aires campaign, having to battle past German qualifier Yannick Hanfmann 6-4, 4-6, 7-5 in the first round.

Then 24-year-old had little trouble in the second round match though as he knocked out Munar 6-2, 6-1 in an hour and 13 minutes. Cerundolo saved 2 of 2 break points and capitalised on 5 of 12 breaking opportunities to move into the quarterfinals.

The win improved his season record to 6-4. He had made it to the third round at the Australian Open and was a quarterfinalist in Cordoba last week.

Zapata Miralles Ousts Fourth Seed Schwatzman

Bernabe Zapata Miralles ousted fourth seed Diego Schwartzman to reach his second tour-level quarterfinal.

Schwartzman was the winner in 2021 and a finalist last year, but he was troubled by the world no. 74 right from the start of the second round contest on Thursday. The Spaniard allowed the Argentine to win just one of his eight service games in the entire match, taking the contest 6-1, 6-3 in an hour and 18 minutes.

Zapata Miralles converted half of the 14 break points he held in the match, while he failed to save any of the three break points he faced.

The win over the world no. 32 turned out to be a much easier one than the two-and-a-half hour first round affair against fellow Spaniard Pedro Martinez. Zapata Miralles had won that match with a scoreline of 6-1, 3-6, 6-4.

The spaniard had a tough start to the season, losing all three of his hard court matches, but a switch to his preferred surface (clay) has turned his fortunes. He won the opener in Cordoba before falling in the second round. He has followed that performance with two wins in Buenos Aires. Can he make the semifinals?

Cerundolo v Zapata Miralles Prediction and Tip

Cerundolo has a good record in Buenos Aires. He had a fine run on clay last year and has had a decent start in 2023. Expect him to advance to the semifinals.
