Masarova, Making Waves

Rebeka Masarova looks primed to enjoy a breakthrough season in 2023. The 23-year-old is 14-4 so far, which includes her qualifying victories in Dubai over the weekend.

The Spaniard first dismissed Olga Danilovic 6-3, 6-2, followed by a 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 win over the experienced Canadian Rebecca Marino.

Masarova has had an exciting start to the year, having reached her first WTA career final in January. In the ASB Classic, the two-time Junior Grand Slam finalist beat the likes of Sara Errani, Anna Blinkova, Karolina Muchova, and Ysaline Bonaventure to reach the historic title match. While she lost that game to Coco Gauff, the current World No. 95 has built on that experience since by reaching the second round in Linz and clearing the qualifiers in Lyon.

Rebeka has some experience to boast, spread across 11 ITF finals and a couple across the Challenger circuits.

Sasnovich is in a Rut

World No. 44 Aliaksandra Sasnovich has endured a start to forget, picking up just one main-draw win in 2023. She is 2-5 at the moment, most recently competing in the Qatar Open where she lost to Marino in the final qualifying match.

Her sole proper win of the season came in the Australian Open, where she beat Brenda Fruhvirtova in straight sets.

The 28-year-old Belarusian closed the previous season at 35-21 with two WTA singles finals. She has some experience to back her play but her recent form doesn’t quite do justice to her potential.

In Abu Dhabi, Sasnovich was stunned by Mirjam Bjorklund in the opening qualifying match while in Adelaide 1 & 2, she was beaten respectively by Kaia Kanepi and Anna Kalinskaya.

Sasnovich v Masarova Prediction and Tip

There is no denying that Masarova has potential. Given the wind in her sails and the kind of momentum she has, she will fancy her chances of starting with a win in Dubai. Aliaksandra can put up a solid fight but it may be a bit too hard for her to win this one.
