Both victories were in straight sets.

Djere Has Won This Trophy in the Past

Djere will have fond memories of this tournament from five years ago, because he won his first senior ATP title in Rio, beating Felix Augur-Aliassime in the final.

Since then, he has won the Sardinia Open and been beaten in the final, both on clay, although his most recent final, last year, in Winston Salem, was on hard courts. He lost that match to Adrian Mannarino of France.

He has experienced a mixed season so far, reaching the second round in Pune, and the quarter-finals in Auckland.

Djere’s interest in the Australian Open was ended at the second round stage by Grigor Dimitrov, and he lost in the same round in Buenos Aires last week.

In mitigation he can claim that he was playing the world number one, Carlos Alcaraz, and he did take the Spaniard to three sets.

Molcan Yet to Find Form This Year

Molcan is still waiting to experience success on the senior tour, having reached three finals in the past 21 months, all of them on clay, and finishing on the losing side each time.

Two of those defeats came in the space of a few weeks last year, Molcan picking up the loser’s cheque in Marrakech and Lyon.

The Slovak number one would be the first to acknowledge that he has not started 2023 as he might have liked.

He began his year with successive defeats in Pune and Auckland, before a five set win over Stan Wawrinka in the first round of the Australian Open brought an end to that sequence.

Injury forced him to pull out of his second round match with Augur Aliassime, though he was two sets down at the time, and he has not won since.

He lost his one singles tie in the Davis Cup and was beaten in straight sets by Dominic Thiem in Buenos Aires.

Djere v Molcan Prediction and Tip

Both men would  regard themselves as clay court specialists, so they will relish playing on the surface in Rio. Djere, though has past history in this tournament, and is in the better form of the pair currently. He can be considered the marginal favourite.
