Pedro Martinez v Cristian Garin Head to Head

The pair have played each other four times before, and Garin leads their head to head series by four matches to one. He won both their matches in 2021, on the grass of Wimbledon, and the clay of Bastad.

The Chilean also won at the Australian Open last year, but Martinez was the victor at the Miami Masters two months later.

Their most recent match was in Cordoba two weeks ago, Garin winning in three sets.

Martinez Looking for First Win of the Year on Clay

Martinez will already be looking forward to going to Chile next week, where he is the defending champion.

However, although clay is his favourite surface, he has yet to experience any success on it so far this year.

In fact, since reaching the quarter-finals in Pune, he is winless on the ATP tour.

That losing sequence began in Melbourne, where he was beaten by Hubert Hurkasz in straight sets in the first round of the Australian Open.

Then, in Cordoba, in the latest sequence of his rivalry with Garin, he dropped the first set on a tie-break, before hitting back to win the second, But the Chilean white-washed him in the third.

Garin Looking to Make Up for Lost Time and Points

Having won five ATP titles, all of them on clay, Garin is not used to his current lowly ranking, but that reflects his poor form in the latter half of last season and also because he did not earn the number of points that he would normally have got by reaching his first Grand Slam quarter-final at Wimbledon last year.

Therefore, the South American swing is an ideal opportunity for the Chilean to make up for lost time and points.

He began his campaign in Cordoba well enough with that win over Martinez, but then came unstuck in his second round match with Joao Sousa of Portugal, the world number 142.

It was Sousa who made the better start, and claimed the first set.

Garin went a break up in the second set, held a set point, but let his advantage slip, and the Portuguese went on to complete a straight sets victory.

Martinez v Garin Prediction and Tip

Although Martinez may be considered the favourite as the higher ranked player, the weight of history, and recent at that, is on the side of Chilean. With the need to resume his climb up the rankings paramount in his mind, he will be looking to extend his winning run against the Spaniard.
