Francisco Cerundolo leads Carballes Baena 4-0 in their head-to-head. All their matches were contested on clay including the 2022 meeting which incidentally was at the Rio Open.

Cerundolo Makes Buenos Aires Quarterfinal

Francisco Ceundolo recently overtook Diego Schwartzman as his country’s No. 1 and he is in strong pursuit of his second ATP title in the South America Golden Swing.

Cerundolo has now made back-to-back quarterfinals in his opening two tournaments, although he retired midway through his match in Corodoba against Federico Coria.

Last week, however, he was beaten narrowly by Bernabe Zapata Miralles in Buenos Aires. Despite pinching the second set of that match in the tiebreak, Cerundolo was fatigued as the went the distance and the Spaniard’s stamina gave him an advantage on that front to close out the win.

Cerundolo will be looking to reprise or even better last year’s result at the Rio Open when he made the semifinals. Incidentally, he defeated Carballes Baena in that run, before going on to lose to Diego Schwartzman in the last four.

Carballes Baena Picks Up Second Win of 2023

Roberto Carballes Baena had a poor January, not that most of it was his fault. He reached the second round in Pune in the opening week, but drew the top seed Marin Cilic, and eventually went down in three sets.

And he flew straight to Melbourne for the Australian Open looking to win a main draw match for the second time in his career Down Under.

But he didn’t have any stroke of luck, as he received the toughest draw of any player, facing Novak Djokovic in his backyard. While he did put up a fight in the first two sets against Djokovic who was bothered by a hamstring injury, Carballes Baena didn’t have the weapons to hurt the Serb and was swatted aside 6-3 6-4 6-0.

The 29-year-old’s next tournament was in Cordoba at the start of the Golden Swing where he played one of the longest matches of the season lasting over three hours, but finished on the losing side, going down 6-7 6-3 7-5 to Zapata Miralles.

He did, however, score his second win of the season a week later in Buenos Aires beating countryman Ramos Vinolas in an upset.

Cerundolo v Carballes Baena Prediction and Tip

Right from the Challenger circuit to the ATP Tour, this has been a harrowing matchup for Carballes Baena. And with Cerundolo a much-improved player from 12 months ago when they last met, it could get even worse for the Spaniard here.
