Spaniard Looks to Snap Two-Match Losing Streak

Big things were expected of Albert Ramos Vinolas at the start of the South America Golden Swing in Corodoba where he was the defending champion.

But defeat in the semifinal to Federico Coria was forthcoming after playing a couple of three-setters in the lead-up to that match. It was clear that the Spaniard was biding his time in transitioning to the red clay.

Failure to win a title in his first tournament has put pressure on the 35-year-old lefty for the remainder of the clay-court swing in February.

Last week, he fell to a straight-sets defeat to countryman Roberto Carballes Baena. He paid the price for his inefficiency, converting just one of nine break points as Carballes Baena ran rampant behind his serve.

Ramos Vinolas has not won the Rio Open, but he’s been to a semifinal before, doing so in the 2017 season.

Etcheverry Nearly Beat Norrie

Tomas Martin Etcheverry came close to scoring the biggest win of his career by ranking at the Argentina Open this past week, taking a set from British No. 1 Cameron Norrie before losing in three.

Etcheverry had taken the first set, blazing winners and putting a lot of first serves in. But following a couple of rain interruptions, Norrie managed to turn the match around after the break and scrape through.

It was the sort of performance that should give the Argentine plenty of confidence and a feelgood factor he can compete with the ATP’s top-tier opponents on the red clay.

It will be the first time he is appearing in the main draw of the Rio Open after working his way in the ranking to join the Top 100. Can he post his first win over Ramos Vinolas in three meetings?

Ramos Vinolas v Etcheverry Prediction and Tip

Ramos Vinolas was so predictable and passive in his last outing, losing to Carballes Baena. Etcheverry, by contrast, played some clutch tennis in the first set against Norrie. If he brings the same energy and gusto, he might upset the inconsistent Spaniard.
