Kubler Won His First Grand Slam Title This Year

World no. 74 Jason Kubler is set to make his Doha debut this year. The 29-year-old Aussie is 4-2 on the tour and 6-3 overall in 2023.

Kubler’s biggest achievement this year came in doubles when, along with partner Rinky Hijikata, he won his maiden Grand Slam title at the Australian Open.

In singles, Kubler won both his matches at the United Cup, reached the round of 16 in Adelaide-2 and won one match at the Australian Open. Most recently, he played in the Manama Challenger last week, winning the first two rounds but falling to world no. 399 Abedallah Shelbayh in three sets.

Kubler tends to do well on hard courts, but last year his best came on clay when he produced a 20-5 record during a 50-22 season, across levels. Kubler featured in two ITF and two Challenger finals. Both his Challenger finals came on hard court. While he won the title in Little Rock, he finished runner-up in Orlando.

Karatsev On Four-Match Losing Streak in Main Draws

After touching great heights in 2021 and peaking to a career-high ranking of no. 14 in the first week of February last year, there has been a sharp decline in Aslan Karatsev’s performance as a result of which the Russian has fallen out of the top 100 this week.

It’s the first time that Karatsev has fallen out of the top 100 since his emphatic Grand Slam debut at the Australian Open two years ago, when he went on to reach the semifinals of the tournament.

Karatsev won two titles from three finals during the break through season in 2021. He added a third title by winning last year’s season opener in Sydney, but a string of poor performances saw him finish the season with a dismal 17-29 record on the tour and an 18-31 record across levels.

The start of 2023 looked promising as he reached the semis in Pune, but since getting knocked out by Tallon Griekspoor in the final four clash of the Maharashtra Open, he hasn’t been able to win another main draw match. Karatsev lost in the first round of the Australian OPen to Grigor Dimitrov and then Filip Krajinovic beat him in the opener in Montpellier.

He came through the qualifiers in Rotterdam, but once again it was Dimtrov who sent him packing in the first round.

Can Karatsev put on a better show in Doha? He did win in Dubai two years ago, but in Doha he has a 1-2 record, with a round of 16 finish in 2021 being his best so far.

Kubler v Karatsev Prediction and Tip

With wins not coming easily Karatsev will be down on confidence. In contrast, Kubler is in slightly better form, but was shocked by Jordan’s Shelbayh last week. It will be a close contest with Kubler edging past the Russian.
