Broady on Seven-Match Winning Streak

He has done well at the lower level tournaments, now Liam Broady will be hoping to replicate that form at the tour-level as he gears up to play the season’s first main draw match on the tour.

The Briton knocked out Georgia’s Nikoloz Basilashvili in the second qualifying round on Sunday to enter the main draw in Doha.

Broady saved 11 of 12 break points and converted 3 of 12 to win the one hour and 36 minute contest 6-4, 6-3. The lefty had also won his first qualifying round in straight sets, beating local hope Mubarak Shannan Zayid 6-1, 6-1.

The back-to-back qualifying round wins improved Broady to 12-3 in 2023. His best came at the Vilnius 2 Challenger earlier this month, when he went on to win the indoor title to claim his second Challenger title.

He was also a quarterfinalist at the Canberra Challenger earlier in the season.

The win over Basialshvili, who was the top seed in the qualifying rounds, would have given the 29-year-old a lot of confidence. He is currently on a seven-match winning streak and will hope to keep that streak going.

Outplayed in the first set, Oleksii Krutykh bounced back to beat Pavel Kotov in the second qualifying round on Sunday to make it to the main draw in Doha.

The Ukrainian failed to convert four break point chances in the first set, while his opponent broke him twice to take the first set 6-1. But it was the world no. 167 who clawed his way back into the contest. He saved all six break points that he faced in the second set and captalised on one of the four breaking chances to draw level at one set apiece.

In the final set, it was Krutykh who took complete control of the match. He did not face a single break point while he broke Kotov twice to win 1-6, 6-3, 6-3.

He had earlier beaten world no. 110 Matteo Arnaldi in straight sets in the first qualifying round.

Krutykh is playing some excellent tennis this year. The 22-year-old qualified for his maiden Grand Slam this year, but was beaten in the first round by Diego Schwartzman.

Krutykh is at his best on clay courts. Last year, he won his first two Challenger titles, both on clay. This year he has an 8-4 record from all his matches and al of those matches have been played on hard courts. Can he make an impression in the first round?
