Wang Xinyu v Elina Avanesyan Head to Head

They have never played on the WTA Tour. They did meet earlier this year on the ITF circuit though with Wang coming away a winner.

Solid Start for Wang

Wang Xinyu has started this year rather well with a 9-6 record so far and it’s a hugely important year for her. The youngster needs to finally break through in a proper way after not playing that well last year.

This event in Merida is a good chance for that as it doesn’t have that strong of a field due to a WTA 1000 event being played this week. There are some solid points to be won and Wang will try to build upon that. It’s a hard court which will benefit Wang as she plays her best tennis on that surface.

By nature, the Chinese player is a really aggressive and attacking one that likes to play rallies on her own terms. She’s played in Mexico last week already which will make it easy for her to adjust to these conditions. It was a decent level shown from her and she hopes to keep that going.

The stakes are high and I believe she will rise to the occasion.

Avanesyan Qualifies for Main Draw

Elina Avanesyan qualified for the main draw of this event by winning two matches. The Russian played two really solid matches overall. In the first one, she defeated Nao Hibino and in the second she defeated Laura Pigossi. Both of these matches went to three sets.

She could be a bit fatigued in this one because of those two matches but I think it shows a lot of fighting spirit which might be vital in this one.

They did play a few days ago but it was not a match on the WTA Tour and while Avanesyan didn’t win, she did push her opponent quite hard.

She’s more inclined to clay tennis overall but she can post a decent record on hard courts as she went 11-7 last year. This year has been solidly okay for her with a 4-4 record but she is capable of far more and perhaps this week will show that.

Wang v Avanesyan Prediction and Tip

They played one match on the ITF with Wang winning in three sets. I think this goes similarly. The Chinese player is likely to win the match but the over is another really solid option.
