Iga Swiatek v Leylah Fernandez Head to Head

There has been one previous meeting between these two players and Swiatek had won that. It came at the 2022 Adelaide International.

Swiatek Coming off Quickest Title Win

Tried hunting for records for this one and haven’t found any tournament so far on the WTA circuit in which a player has won the title conceding just five games in total. Yep, that’s correct, Swiatek dropped only five games in the entirety of the Qatar Open last week to go on to lift the trophy!

This came close on the heels of a relatively early exit for Swiatek at the Australian Open prompting her to say she accepts she isn’t perfect but is practical about the same.

And following that Swiatek went on to dish out a display of perfection. One that saw her get a first round bye and a quarterfinal walkover from Belinda Bencic while winning the remaining three matches for the loss of only five games.

First she routed Danielle Collis 6-0, 6-1, then overcame Veronika Kudermetova by the same scoreline before sending Jessica Pegula on her way 6-3, 6-0. These are three of the best opponents one could face in any tournament, brilliant in their own right and yet, Swiatek stormed past all of them.

Not for nothing does she start off a 1/10 favourite in this one.

Fernandez Hoping for a Fighting Display

Fernandez hasn’t had the best of times on the WTA circuit since having made the final of the 2021 US Open where she had lost to Emma Raducanu. While her fall in form hasn’t been as stark as Raducanu, she has gone from having reached 13th in the world to her current ranking of 37th.

Even this year, Fernandez had won just three of the seven main draw matches she played before this tournament began.

Here in the first round Fernandez came through against Julia Grabher, winning 6-4, 6-2 in an hour and 15 minutes to seal her place against Swiatek.

The Canadian youngster was broken once in the match – it came in the first – but faced no break-points in the second set and overcame her opponent’s serve on two occasions. Her biggest takeaway from the match was her serving which saw three-fourth of her first serves going in and Fernandez winning 87% of those points.

Fernandez will now hope Swiatek has an off day to be able to put up some fight.

Swiatek v Fernandez Prediction and Tip

This will be no surprise but Swiatek is a whopping 1/10 favourite to win this and 4/11 to do that in straight sets. Don’t see how Fernandez can do anything different to even take a set into the distance forget the match.
