Liudmila Samsonova v Qinwen Zheng Head to Head

It’s 2-1 to Samsonova; she has won their last two meetings on tour – including the recent one in Abu Dhabi.

Samsonova Stuns Badosa

Liumdila Samsonova began her campaign in Dubai with a three-set slogfest against Spain’s Paula Badosa. The match, lasting for a little under three and a half hours, saw the 14th seed win 6-7(3), 7-6(5).

It was quite a contest, with Samsonova dishing out 12 aces, winning 74% of first service points, and, more impressively, saving nine out of 11 break points. The match was just as much a test of endurance and perseverance. The question remains whether she can emulate the same result against the rising Zheng.

The task is not as daunting as one may make it to be; the 24-year-old is the current World No. 13 –  a career-high feat which she achieved only this month. In Abu Dhabi, she made it to the final after beating the likes of Claire Liu, Barbora Krejcikova, Zheng, and Veronika Kudermetova.

That said, those results were sandwiched between early-round exits in the Australian Open and Qatar Open – respectively, to Donna Vekic and Sofia Kenin.

Zheng Moves Past Zhang

Qinwen Zheng hardly faced any difficulties in her opener, dismissing Shuai Zhang 6-3, 6-1, in just an hour and nine minutes. The 20-year-old put up a near-flawless performance, boasting a superb service game (90% first-service win rate) and losing only two break points.

Like Samsonova, she too arrived in Dubai with a career-high ranking of #24 and some impressive results to back her play.

The most notable was her semifinal showing in Abu Dhabi, followed by second-round appearances in Adelaide and Melbourne.

Zheng closed last season at 39-19 with two singles titles and a WTA runner-up trophy from Tokyo – losing that final match to none other than Samsonova 5-7, 5-7.

Samsonova v Zheng Prediction and Tip

Samsonova is more experienced and will start this one as the odds-on favourite – but that can be negated quickly by a determined Zheng. The two players have always pushed each other in their previous encounters, and this one is likely to be along similar lines.

Calling a winner here is tricky, but you may want to consider the ‘over’ games and sets markets.
