Hugo Gaston v Juan Pablo Varillas Head to Head

They played once and Gaston won that match.

Gaston Finally Scores Wins

Hugo Gaston’s career has been very up and down as the French player made headlines a few years ago when he won some incredible matches at Roland Garros. He then struggled with his tennis for a while before making a splash at the Paris Masters.

Since then it’s been mostly up and down because he simply can’t find a consistent level. His best is really good but he can also play rather poorly. So far it’s been somewhere in the middle with a 5-4 record but two of those wins came in the qualifiers here.

They were good wins for him but he faces a tricky challenge right now. His game is not one of power but versatility as he likes to resort to drop shots when playing on clay. He can serve precisely but not with many powers so it’s not a major weapon on clay.

A lot will depend on how he feels because he’s a very streaky player that can go up an down quickly.

Varillas Looking Strong on Clay

Juan Pablo Varrilas is a very different player to Gaston as he likes to attack and he does with a lot of force. The Peruvian player grew up on clay so that’s where he feels most comfortable and it makes him very dangerous on this surface.

Last year he nearly ousted Felix Auger-Alissime at Roland Garros and the Canadian took Nadal to five sets. This year he battled Zverev at the Australian Open but lost in five sets. Stamina is not a problem for him and he can be very dangerous at times.

It makes him the favourite here because his opponent doesn’t do well with attacking players. If Varrilas produces his best here he can expect to win.

The biggest danger for him is being too active because he can play himself out of matches sometimes. That happened against Zverev this year.

Gaston v Varrilas Prediction and Tip

Gaston is I feel the better player overall or has the higher ceiling despite being lower ranked right now. That is why I’d consider this an upset if Varillas won but I still back him over Gaston in this spot even though he could lose.
