Fabio Fognini v Tomas Barrios Vera Head to Head

They never played before.

Fognini Fading Away

Fabio Fognini is slowly fading away from singles tennis as the Italian tennis player is failing to match the younger generation in the way it’s necessary. Fognini is still a wonderful player capable of producing a high level however the motivation seems to be lacking a bit.

He does produce good moments but the younger player manage to outplay him simply because they are more motivated to win. He played three singles matches this year and lost all of them. Neither of those matches was particularly close and it’s looking really tricky to find a matchup he might win.

Tennis is not the problem per se because he’s playing it really well in the doubles but when he steps alone on the court it seems like he loses all motivation.

He played in Rio last year and made the semi-final so perhaps he fins some of that form from last year. He’s capable of winning, that’s for sure.

Barrios Vera Makes it Through the Qualifiers

Tomas Barrios Vera qualified for the main draw with two really good wins as both of them came over capable clay players and in straight sets. He grew up on clay and him doing well on this surface is hardly a surprise. Barrios Vera is 8-3 on the surface this year showing off his really good start to the year.

He went 20-14 last year and that’s a fair record. The Chilean is a tall player so he can serve well and set up points when he gets a short ball.

He moves rather well and is very motivated to do well because a top-100 debut has eluded him for quite some time and perhaps this good momentum can carry him to that. It’s his first time in Rio and that’s something to remember although he played two matches and looked good.

Barrios Vera is favoured to win the match albeit the margin is slight. He’ll be more motivated to win than Fognini, at least in my opinion.

Fognini v Barrios Vera Prediction and Tip

So they never played before but this is a matchup the Chilean should win when we consider all things. Fognini can always surprise so be aware of that.
