Aryna Sabalenka v Lauren Davis Head to Head

There has been one previous meeting between these two and it came all the way back in 2017 when Sabalenka defeated Davis in straight sets at the Washington Open.

Sabalenka 11-0 for the Season

11 matches across two tournaments played. 11 matches and two titles won. That’s Sabalenka’s record for the season and already she would have her eyes set on Iga Swiatek’s winning streak from the previous season.

Yes, we are still some way off from the 37 matches that the world number one won in a row but Sabalenka has looked like she has the form and pedigree to get close.

Which would also mean the Australian Open winner Sabalenka will need to better her record at the Dubai Open where she has played six times in the past and made the quarterfinals just twice. And both times, she was sent packing.

Sabalenka comes into this match having lost just one set all season but the one aspect to think about will be the match-fitness or preparedness. She hasn’t played in over 23 days and while most players would welcome that kind of a break it also opens up the possibility of rustiness, especially against good quality opponents.

Against the 49th-ranked Davis, it might not matter that much.

Davis Much Improved This Year

Davis looked to have fallen by the wayside after some decent performances over the years but she looked to have surprised a lot of fans earlier this season with her Hobart International title victory.

The 84th-ranked player at the start of that tournament needed to come through the qualifiers but then went on a roll to claim her second career title.

Since then, coming into this tournament, she had won just one round – it came at the Australian Open – before losing in the qualifying rounds of the Doha Open last week. Which is why a first round victory over Jil Teichmann, albeit a hard-fought one would be a bit of a relief.

Davis now, however, will take on the world number two and a player who looks to be at the peak of her capabilities as a tennis player. Her only hope is if Sabalenka stumbles to rustiness but it still might not be enough.

Sabalenka v Davis Prediction and Tip

Sabalenka is a huge favourite here so not too much point going in with her win or even a straight-set win for that matter. We could look at the games market and the sense I get is we might not see too many more than 18 games in the encounter.
