Sloane Stephens v Leolia Jeanjean Head to Head

This will be the first career meeting between Sloane Stephens and Leolia Jeanjean.

Stephens Winless this Season

Sloane Stephens is 0-3 in 2023, losing first-round matches in Auckland, Hobart, and Australian Open respectively. Worryingly for the American, she did not even manage to win a set in those defeats.

It pales in comparison to her end of last season where she made a great run in Guadalajara, reaching a rare quarterfinal at WTA 1000 level.

The former US Open champ hasn’t played since losing to Anastasia Potapova in the first round in Melbourne, passing up on the opportunity to rack up valuable points during the European indoor season or the Middle East swing.

Stephens, instead, will play at the newly-minted Merida Open where she is the second seed. But that doesn’t guarantee she will have it easy in Mexico.

Historically, she has faltered even at tournaments with weaker fields, and if she is not able to find her range early on, she could be prey to the French qualifier Leolia Jeanjean.

Jeanjean Beats Russia’s Andreeva in Qualifying

Leolia Jeanjean registered a pair of three-set wins in qualifying to book her spot in the Merida main draw. Jeanjean has had to dig deep in Mexico, despite being the higher-ranked player each round.

First up, she took out Despina Papamichail, overcoming a minor blip in the second set before cruising in the third. And on Sunday, she came from a set down to beat the talented Erika Andreeva of Russia, 5-7 6-4 6-4.

It will be just his second tournament of the year after entering last month’s Australian Open as a lucky loser. The Frenchwoman has tallied three wins from 10 main draw matches at Tour level in her career thus far.

But with Stephens very much an unknown quantity and with a tendency of being caught cold in her first match back, we cannot rule out an upset.

Stephens v Jeanjean Prediction and Tip

Jeanjean is no stranger to upsetting the odds. But overall, Stephens’ love affair with Mexico makes her a strong favorite. She has won two career titles in this part of the world and we reckon she will get off to a flier.
