Aryna Sabalenka v Jelena Ostapenko Head to Head

Their only previous meeting came in 2019 and Sabalenka had won that one in straight sets.

Sabalenka Returns with a Bang

If one thought Sabalenka might have been a tad rusty coming into her first match since her Australian Open victory, one was wrong.

There were no such signs from the world number two who crushed Lauren Davis in an hour, winning 6-0, 6-1 to seal her place in the third round. Sabalenka had earlier earned herself a first round bye.

Slamming six aces, Sabalenka saved the only break-point she faced in the match while also getting the better of Davis’ serve a whopping five times. She won 88% of her first serve points to go with that.

This was Sabalenka’s 12th successive win for the season and she has begun to look more and more invincible as the season has gone along. Now comes a slightly more challenging opponent in round three but given what we have seen of Sabalenka she should have it covered.

Ostapenko Showing Her Own Sparkle

Following a solid showing at the Australian Open Ostapenko had risen to 12th in the world but has since then tapered down and begun this tournament ranked 20th. Not that it has bothered her too much as for the second successive time in the competition the Latvian number one came through in straight sets.

After having dropped just five games in her opening win over Katerina Zavatska, Ostapenko routed the much-vaunted teenager Linda Fruhvirtova in the second. She rode to a 6-2, 6-0 win over Fruhvirtova.

In a match lasting a mere 56 minutes, Ostapenko was broken once in the first set off her very first service game but from that point on it was a matter of just one-way traffic.

Ostapenko held on to make it 2-2 and then won the next 10 games in a row to send a rather shocked-looking Fruhvirtova on her way. By the end it became too one-sided with Ostapenko winning 10 of 11 of her own first serve points and 12 of the 17 points on her opponent’s serve.

Can she put up a similar fight against Sabalenka though?

Sabalenka v Ostapenko Prediction and Tip

Sabalenka is 1/3 to win this and there is no doubt we will be backing her to win this – 12 wins in a row counts for something after all. But it might not be that one-sided.
