Jessica Pegula v Ana Bogdan Head to Head

While the two have never played each other at the highest level there have been a couple of meetings on grass in the qualifiers of the Rosmalen Open in 2015 and then another one on the ITF circuit in 2016. Pegula had won both.

Pegula Stretched by Tomova

It was a strange second round win for Pegula who looked to be on the top of her game for two of the three sets against Victoriya Tomova. And while that was enough against Tomova, Pegula would know that might not work against players of higher quality.

Pegula won 6-2, 5-7, 6-1 in a match lasting two hours and seven minutes but not before the American number one had been broken five times in the match. Curiously enough, even in the first set where she cruised to a win, Pegula dropped her serve on a couple of occasions.

And it wasn’t even like Pegula was coming off a long layoff – like Sabalenka was in her second round match. It looked to be a matter of having very little control over her serve and that’s where she struggled to get going.

Looking at the bright side though, this was Pegula’s sixth successive win in a WTA 1000 event having won the tournament in Guadalajara the last time she had stepped on court for a WTA 1000 tournament. Can she make it seven in seven now?

Bogdan Shocks Shelby

It is fast becoming one of Bogdan’s best runs in tennis tournaments in recent times. It took her two hours and eight minutes alright but Bogdan managed to find a way past Shelby Rogers in straight sets to grab her fourth successive win in the tournament.

Bogdan won 7-6 (3), 6-3 to follow in the footsteps of her qualifying victories over Clara Burel and Tereza Martincova and a first round win against Laura Siegemund. All of these came in straight sets too.

In the first set here, Bogdan was twice down a break but fought back to level things out. She then had a chance to serve it out at 6-5 but eventually won the set in a tie-breaker.

The second set was a lot more straightforward with Bogdan taking an early 2-0 lead and never dropping her serve. With Rogers serving to stay in the match at 3-5, Bogdan broke her yet again, winning it off her second match-point.

Can she put up a similar showing against Pegula?

Pegula v Bogdan Prediction and Tip

While Pegula did struggle to get going in her second round we reckon it might have been one of those days. Expecting her to find her A game again and clinch this in two.
