Alejandro Davidovich-Fokina v Soon-woo Kwon Head to Head

The pair have never met before. This will be the first match between the 23 year old Spaniard, and the South Korean, who is two years older.

Davidovich-Fokina Begins with Routine Win

Davidovich-Fokina is primarily regarded as a clay court player, as evidenced by the fact that his best result in a Grand Slam was reaching the last eight in the French Open in 2021, and he was a beaten finalist in the Monte Carlo Masters last year.

However, having twice reached the fourth round of the US Open, there is more to his game than that.

Prior to this week, Fokina’s best performance this year had been a quarter-final appearance in Adelaide.

But Fokina made a good start to his campaign in  Doha with a routine straight sets win over Constant Lestienne of France, the world number 53.

Two early breaks put the Spaniard in control of the first set, and, although Lestienne got one of them back, he could not recover the second.

The second set was almost a mirror image of the first. Lestienne found himself two breaks down, managed to pull one back, and not the other.

It was all done and dusted in 85 minutes.

Kwon Given a Scare By Teenage Wildcard

When the draw was made and Kwon discovered that he was playing Jordanian wildcard Abedallah Shelbayh, he could not have imagined what a struggle it would be to beat the teenager, ranked only 276th in the world.

And, when he forced the only break to take the first set, all seemed to be going according to plan.

Much to the delight of the mainly Arab crowd, though, Shelbayh came roaring out of the gate in the second set, and took a five love lead, and, although he let his inexperience show by allowing the South Korean to recover one of the breaks, he was still able to close out the set and level the match.

In the third set Kwon just could not shake off the Jordanian, who matched him serve for serve.

Just when it looked like the match might be decided on a tie-break, Shelbayh opened the door, giving Kwon match points. The Jordanian saved two, but the third proved beyond him.

Kwon would have been relieved as much as anything.

Davidovich-Fokina v Kwon Prediction and Tip

Based on the way they progressed past the first round, Davidovich-Fokina must be considered the favourite, He was able to notch up a relatively routine win, whereas Kwon narrowly avoided an upset against a wildcard.
