Richard Gasquet v Stan Wawrinka Head to Head

It’s a rivalry that dates back to 2006, but they have only met on five occasions with Gasquet lead 3-2.

Most recently, they met in the second round in Rotterdam last week and Wawrinka won that match without breaking a sweat. He did not face a single break point but broke the Frenchman thrice to win 6-3, 6-3.

Gasquet Survives Lokoli Test

World no. 43 Richard Gasquet needed three hours and 15 minutes to dispatch French qualifier Laurent Lokoli in the first round on Tuesday.

Both players saved 100% of the break points that they faced in the first set, with Gasquet saving two and Lokoli saving five. However, it was Gasquet who edged the tiebreak to draw first blood.

The world no. 173 made a remarkable comeback in the second set, winning six consecutive games to close out the set after falling 0-2 behind. With match tied at one-set apiece, the third set promised to be a thriller and it indeed lived up to the hype. Lokoli was the first to break as he built a 2-4 lead. But the 36-year-old wasn’t ready to surrender. He won three games in a row to stay alive in the contest, then missed out on two match point opportunities he created on Lokoli’s serve in two different games. But eventually he had another match point in the tiebreak, which he converted to win the match 7-6 (7-5), 2-6, 7-6 (7-5).

With the win, Gasquet is now 14-11 in Marseille. He is a two-time semifinalist in the tournament and has fallen in the last eight thrice.

Gasquet, who picked up his 16th career title in his 33rd final in Auckland earlier this year, is 6-4 in 2023.

Can he reach a sixth quarterfinal in Marseiile with a win on Wednesday?

Wawrinka Holds Off Bergs

Former world no. 3 Stan Wawrinka held off a spirited comeback effort from Belgium’s Zizou Bergs in the opening round to keep his chances alive in the tournament. Currently ranked no. 105 in the world, the Swiss wasn’t broken in the entire contest as he saved seven of seven break points. He too had seven chances to break Bergs’ serve and he took two of those to seal a 6-4, 6-7 (6-8), 6-4 victory in two-and-a-half hours.

A three-time Grand Slam champion, Wawrinka gained 25 places in the rankings this week following a quarterfinal finish in Rotterdam. That was his best effort so far this year,  and he will be hoping to match that record with a win on Wednesday.

The 37-year-old Wawrinka is playing in Marseille for the first time in seven years. He has been to the last eight twice in his previous three occasions, but has never made it to the semis.

Wawrinka has a 5-4 win-loss record in 2023. He beat Alexander Bublik twice and got one win each over Daniel Altmaier (Davis Cup), Gasquet (Rotterdam) and Bergs (Marseille).

Gasquet v Wawrinka Prediction and Tip

After edging out their opponents in three sets each in the first round, they will be bracing for another long battle. Barely a week ago, Wawrinka had outplayed Gasquet in straight sets in Rotterdam and he will be looking to produce a similar performance this week. However, Gasquet is the seventh seed, he has played a lot of tennis over the last couple of years and has been a consistent performer.
