Caty McNally v Katie Volynets Head to Head

They had played each other once before this in the 2021 Guadalajara Open where McNally won in three sets.

McNally Wins Keen Tussle with Zhu

With McNally’s win-loss record for the year coming into this tournament being a shoddy 1-2, it was no surprise she was a second-favourite against the in-form Lin Zhu.

Zhu, ranked 50 places above McNally, kept losing her serve to her opponent in the first set but the American failed to capitalise on three separate occasions. In the first set tie-breaker that followed though, it was McNally who came up trumps.

Interestingly, the script reversed itself in the second set. It was Zhu who went a break up in the first, seventh and ninth games but kept dropping her serve soon after that. A tie-breaker followed and this time around it was Zhu who won the set.

The final set, however, went McNally’s way who won it 6-1 to win the encounter and move into the second round.

Volynets Returns with Win over Bronzetti

Having last played in the Australian Open, Volynets had done well to make it to the third round in that tournament after starting out as a qualifier. A win over Veronika Kudemetova was the highlight of her performance there.

Resuming her tennis after a near-one-month long break, Volynets came back from a set down to defeat Lucia Bronzetti 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 in two hours and six minutes.

Volynets lost her serve three times in the first set but came back rather well in the next two to hold on to it seven of the eight times she served. The only one time that Volynets did get broken came in the third set but followed it up with two breaks of her own.

How will she now go up against McNally?

McNally v Volynets Prediction and Tip

McNally starts out a favourite and will be our pick to win this but we could see a three-setter here.
