Christopher O’Connell v Roberto Bautista-Agut Head to Head

The pair have never met before. This will be the first match between the 28 year old Australian and the Spaniard, who is six years older.

Verdasco Win Boosts O’Connell Morale

O’Connell is best known for his appearances on the Challenger tour, where he appeared in three finals last year, winning two of them, in Croatia and Japan.

Although he shares the reputation of some of his country’s wines of not travelling well, he cannot claim to have enjoyed a successful home season either, losing in the first round of Adelaide twice and then falling at that stage at the Australian Open.

His first round victory over the Spanish veteran Fernando Verdasco was good for his morale, therefore.

It all seemed to be plain sailing in the first set, during which he lost just one game.

The Spaniard, though, showed that he is still a force to be reckoned with by coming up with the only break of the second set to level the match.

But the Australian ran away with it in the third set as Verdasco tired, wrapping up the match without conceding another game.

Bautista-Agut Wins Late Night Epic

Bautista-Agut’s match against Marton Fucsovics was the final match on court in the first round, and it was as if organisers had left the best to last, as it developed into a mini epic.

The first set was a prelude of what was to come, with three consecutive breaks of serve in the middle of it, leaving the Hungarian a break-up.

He had the opportunity to serve for the set, only for the Spaniard to break back and it went to a tie-break.

Fucsovics had a set point, could not take it, but then it was the turn of Bautista-Agut to spurn an opportunity, before succeeding at his second attempt.

The second set was more sedate by comparison and went with serve, until Bautista-Agut forced two break points, either of which, had he converted them, would have given him the chance to serve for the match.

Instead it was the world number 78 who came up with the crucial break, and the match was level again.

Finally, Bautista-Agut got his nose back in front again when he broke in the seventh game of the third set, but the drama was not yet over.

Facing two match points on his own serve, Fucsovics saved them both, forcing Bautista-Agut to serve out, which he finally did next game after more than three hours on court.

O’Connell v Bautista-Agut Prediction and Tip

Although Bautista-Agut had to work much harder to secure his second round berth, he should have recovered in time and will fully expect to be too strong for the Australian, who has a poor track record in championships such as this.
