Magda Linette v Panna Udvardy Head to Head

This will be their first meeting on the WTA Tour.

Linette Passes Osorio Test

Magda Linette, enjoying life as the new World No. 21 – a career-high feat for her – started her campaign in Merida on a shaky note with a three-set slogfest against Camila Osorio.

The match lasted for two hours and 42 minutes and saw Linette win 6-7(2), 7-5, 6-2. What’s impressive is she saved two match points in the second set – in two consecutive games. Trailing 3-5, she moved on to stage a remarkable comeback which led to her absolute dominance in the third set.

Competing in her first tournament since the Australian Open, the 31-year-old Polish was understandably rusty. That said, the semifinal run from the Slam has certainly helped her up her game a bit.

In Melbourne, she scripted personal history by beating the likes of Anett Kontaveit, Ekaterina Alexandrova, Caroline Garcia, Karolina Pliskova, and Mayar Sherif. Before that, she had featured in the United Cup where she reached the second round and semifinals respectively.

Udvardy Beats Niemeier

Panna Udvardy of Hungary bagged her first WTA win of the season by beating Germany’s Jule Niemeier 7-6(1), 7-6(5). The 91st-ranked player found herself in a close affair but got through only by a small amount.

Up until now, the 24-year-old had featured in a couple of ITF and WTA events but didn’t have much success there.

Most recently, she played in ITF Orlando, losing to Arianne Hartono in round two. In the Aus Open, she fell to Osorio in round one while in Hobart, she lost in the qualifiers to Anna Blinkova. However, she did reach the doubles final there with Viktorija Golubic.

Udvardy closed last season at 42-33 of which, 28 wins and 19 losses came on clay. There’s no denying that she has always been a clay-court specialist – evident from her three doubles and two singles finals on the Challenger circuit in 2022. Perhaps, that’s why she has struggled to perform so far – and why Linette is poised to win.

Linette v Udvardy Prediction and Tip

Linette may find herself in deep waters again, but the chances of her losing this one are low. Udvardy isn’t the best player on hard courts – combined with Magda’s recent form and momentum, there is no debating about the likely winner here.
