Murray Wins Another Three-Setter

Two-time Doha champion Andy Murray edged out fourth seed and world no. 16 Alexander Zverev in a three-hour-plus second round contest on Wednesday to reach his first quarterfinal of the season.

With the two victories in the tournament, Murray has improved his season record to 4-2 and his Doha record to 22-4. This will be the fifth time that the Scot will be playing in the last eight stage in Doha. In all the previous four occasions, Murray has gone on to reach the final. While he won the tournament in 2007 and 2009, he finished runner-up in 2007 and 2017.

Murray began this year’s Doha campaign with a come-from-behind three-set win over Italy’s Lorenzo Sonego. He had saved three match points in the final set to win the two and a half hour contest 4-6, 6-1, 7-6 (7-4).

He survived another three-setter in the second round on Thursday. Murray was out-aced 2-11 by the German and he also hit 25 fewer winners than Zverev’s 49. But he made just 22 unforced errors in the match, 11 fewer than Zverev’s 33. He also saved 7 of 11 break points and converted 3 of 5 for a 7-6 (7-5), 2-6, 7-5 victory.

All four of Murray’s wins this year have come in the deciding sets. He had won two five-setters at the Australian Open, eliminating Matteo Berrettini and Thanasi Kokkinakis, but was stopped in the third round by Roberto Bautista Agut.

Can the 35-year-old world no. 70 reach his fifth semifinal in Doha and a first since finishing runner-up in Stuttgart last year?

Muller Stuns Eighth Seed Van de Zandschulp

Qualifier Alexandre Muller continued his stunning run in the tournament as he knocked out eighth seed Botic Van de Zandschulp to reach his maiden tour-level quarterfinal.

The 26-year-old Frenchman, who had beaten lucky loser Nikoloz Basilashvili 7-6 (7-3), 6-7 (8-10), 6-4 in a two-hour-and-39-minute first-round match, needed just an hour and 18 minutes to dispatch the Dutchman 6-2, 6-4 in the second round.

Muller saved all the three break points that he faced in the match and converted 3 of 7 to improve to 12-6 across levels in 2023.

Mostly playing in the lower level tournaments, Muller had qualified for the main draw in Doha with back-to-back come-from-behind wins over Zhang Zhizhen and Thomas Machac respectively. Both players are ranked much higher than the world no. 170, who will be looking to pull off another upset on Thursday to keep the fairytale going.

Murray v Muller Prediction and Tip

Murray, a 46-time winner on the tour, has a pretty good record in Doha. He has shown his ability to fight this year and after the win over the fourth seed will be far more confident going into the quarterfinals. The former no. 1 is definitely the superior player in the contest and should not have much trouble beating the qualifier.
