Medvedev Sends Broady Packing

Picking up from where he left in Rotterdam las week, third seed Daniil Medvedev began his Doha campaign with a straight sets win over Liam Broady on Wednesday.

The third seed, who had a first round bye, needed an hour and 33 minutes to beat the world no. 144, 6-4, 6-3. The Briton challenged the Russian in the first set, coming back from a break down twice, but Medvedev sealed the set with a third break of serve. He then got the solitary break of the second set to move into the quarterfinals in what is his maiden appearance in Doha.

The victory also improved Medvedev to 11-2 in 2023. The world no. 8, who was a semifinalist in Adelaide could only reach as far as the third round at the Australian Open. However, he was in scintillating form in Rotterdam last week, when he went on to win the title by beating Jannik Sinner in the final. Medvedev had bounced back after losing the first set to the Italian to claim his 16th career title.

The triumph at the indoor tournament helped the 27-year-old to move back into the top 10. Wednesday’s win meant that Medvedev is now on 6-match unbeaten streak. Can he extend it on Thursday?

O’Connell Takes Down the Defending Champion

World no. 94 Christopher O’Connell rallied from a set down to beat the defending champion Roberto Bautista Agut and end the Spaniard’s hopes of reaching a third consecutive final in Doha.

After taking the first set, Bautista Agut had a great chance of closing out the contest as he served for the match at 5-3, but the Aussie made a spirited comeback to take the second set in the tiebreak. Both players exchanged an early break in the third set, but it was O’Connell who had the last laugh, finishing by winning the last three games in a row.

O’Connell had come into the tournament having lost all three of his first round matches at the tour level. However, he began the tournament with a 6-1, 3-6, 6-0 victory over Fernando Verdasco.

The Australian followed up the one-hour-and-42-minute win over the Spanish wild card with a 3-6, 7-6 (7-5) 6-4 win over Bautista Agut on Wednesday.

Can he pull off another upset on Thursday?
