Daniil Medvedev v Andy Murray Head to Head

Medvedev leads the rivalry 2-0. He beat Murray in Brisbane in 2019 and in Miami last year. The Scot is yet to win a set against the Russian.

Medvedev Stays Perfect Against Auger-Aliassime

Daniil Medvedev extended his perfect record against Felix Auger-Aliassime to 6-0 as he knocked out the Canadian in straight sets in the semifinal in Doha on Friday.

The win may have come in straight sets but it was not straight forward by any means as the third seed needed close to two hours to see off the second seed.

Medvedev began the match with a break of serve, but the Canadian sent the set back on serve after breaking the former in the eighth game. Medvedev, however restored his advantage in the very next game, but found himself 15-40 down on his serve in the 10th game. He somehow managed to save both the break points, before closing out the set.

The second set was equally competitive. Medvedev broke early again, but Auger-Aliassime fought back to stay in touch. A tiebreak was needed to separate the two. Medvedev saved three set points during the course of the tiebreak, before wrapping up the contest 6-4, 7-6 (9-7).

With the win, the Russian has now won eight matches in a row. The world no. 8 had come into the tournament following his success in Rotterdam last week, where he beat Jannik Sinner in the final.

Carrying that form to Qatar, Medvedev defeated Liam Broady in straight sets in the second round. He then needed three sets to dispatch Christopher O’ Connell in the quarterfinal.

Friday’s win over Felix improved his season record to 13-2.

The 27-year-old will now be playing in his 29th championship match. Can he end the week by winning his 17th career title?

Murray Saves Five Match Points to Defeat Lehecka

Andy Murray escaped elimination in incredible fashion on Friday as he saved five match points in the final set before ending Jiri Lehecka’s promising run in the semifinal.

In a bid to reach a first tour-level final, the 21-year-old had built a 3-5 lead in the final set. He held two match points on Murray’s serve in the ninth game, but the veteran was equal to his task as he extended the match by at least one more game.

Lehecka, however, seemed to be cruising to victory when he built a 40-0 lead in the next game. But a determined Murray refused to give up. He quite incredibly saved all three of the match points and then completed the win in the final set tiebreak.

The 35-year-old world no. 70 won the two-and-a-half hour contest 6-0, 3-6, 7-6 (8-6). All four of Murray’s wins this week have come in the deciding set. He had also saved three match points in his opening round win over Lorenzo Sonego. Murray then ousted Alexander Zverev 7-6 (7-5), 2-6, 7-5 in a three-hour second-round contest.

In the quarterfinal against the relatively unknown Alexandre Muller, Murray rebounded after losing the first set to win 4-6, 6-1, 6-2.

Murray improved to 6-2 in 2023. Murray’s last eight wins have all come in the deciding sets. The 35-year-old had recorded his last straight sets win over Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the first round in Gijon in October.

The 46-time tour-level champion will be playing in his 71st final. He has a brilliant record in Doha, where he will be playing in the championship game for the fifth time.

Muray won the titles in 2008 and 2009 and finished runner-up in 2007 and 2017. Murray had reached two finals last year, but failed to win either of them. He is still looking to win a first title since triumphing in Antwerp in 2019. Can he end the four-year title drought in Qatar?

Medvedev v Murray Prediction and Tip

Medvedev is in red-hot form. He also has a perfect 2-0 record against Murray and is yet to concede a set against the Scot. He will also be the fresher of the two, having spent much less time on court than Murray.

The world no. 70 has been engaged in four physically and mentally draining matches this week and that might have a bearing on the final outcome of the match. Expect Murray to put up a fight but Medvedev is expected to win.
