Bonzi Shocks de Minaur

Despite coming into his quarterfinal as a rank outsider to get past Alex de Minaur – bookmakers were offering 47/20 for his win before the match began – Bonzi came through against the Aussie in straight sets.

Bonzi won 6-2, 6-4 in an hour and 41 minutes to make it to his second tournament semifinal of the season. At the first in Pune in the first week of the season, Bonzi had entered the final before losing to Tallon Griekspoor.

Slamming five aces and winning 76% of his first serve points, Bonzi made his mark early in the match when he raced to a 4-0 lead with two breaks of serves. Very soon he had clinched the set.

In the second, it was de Minaur who drew first blood when he broke his opponent to go 4-1 up but Bonzi turned that around rather remarkably. Two quick breaks of serves followed as Bonzi grabbed the next five games to win the encounter.

He had earlier sent out Lucas van Assche and Maxime Cressy in the first two rounds and would be looking to make it to his second final of the season. Bonzi is also a couple of wins away from winning his first ever ATP title.

Fils Blows Wawrinka Away

While Bonzi wasn’t quite the favourite going into his quarterfinal, Fils had been tipped to win against Stan Wawrinka by experts and bookmakers alike. That he won in the manner he did was exhilaration to watch with the 18-year-old routing Wawrinka in straight sets.

Fils came through to the semifinal to register his 14th win of the season across different circuits as he came through 6-2, 6-3 in a mere 67 minutes.

With the Frenchman saving all three break-points that he faced in the match, he also managed to break Wawrinka a whopping four times from the 12 chances he got. Other than when Wawrinka won the first game of the opening set, he was never ahead in the encounter with Fils taking control quite early.

A win against Bonzi, which is a realistic possibility for Fils, will help him break into the top 100 of the rankings – he could rise up to as much as to 92nd in the world even if he then loses the final.

With that added motivation, Fils could well be the one to watch here.

Bonzi v Fils Prediction and Tip

No surprises here who the favourite here with the 18-year-old Fils having risen so rapidly this season from being 619th last year to be on the cusp of a top-100 ranking. Fils to grab this one again.
