Andrey Rublev v Filip Krajinovic Head to Head

This is an interesting rivalry with five matches between these two including one in the Davis Cup and it’s Krajinovic who is 3-2 ahead. Of these only one match came in a clay court competition which Krajinovic won last year.

Even more interestingly, none of these matches having gone into a third set.

Rublev Needs a Better Showing Than Rotterdam & Doha

At the time of writing he is ranked fifth in the world but by the time he takes to court, Rublev would have fallen one spot. And that would be thanks to his underwhelming performances at both, the Rotterdam Open and the Qatar Open over the last couple of weeks.

Rublev, who had lived up to the expectations by reaching the quarterfinals at the Australian Open before he went down to the eventual champion Novak Djokovic, has won just one his next three matches.

That came against Tallon Griekspoor in Doha but it was preceded and followed by defeats. One of them was to Alex de Minaur in the first round of the Rotterdam Open and then against Jiri Lehecka at the Doha Open.

Make no mistake, both these opponents have been tricky for most players in recent times but Rublev would have liked to do a lot better. Make the latter stages of at least one of those tournaments.

Can he shrug that off and start things off with a win against an opponent who has had the better of him overall?

Krajinovic Struggling in 2023

While Krajinovic will start things off here knowing he has had a wood over Rublev in overall head to head, he would also look at his record this year and wonder how he can turn things around.

Because Krajinovic has featured in four tournaments in 2023 and won just three matches. Two of these came in the Pune Open, the first tournament he played in but since that second round victory over Michael Mmoh, he has lost four of the next five matches he has been a part of.

In fact, he enters this tournament on the back of successive defeats in Montpellier and Marseille, losing to Lorenzo Sonego and Alexander Bublik, leaving him with something to think about.

The question is whether he has enough firepower to get the better of Rublev, who has himself been slightly underwhelming in more recent times.

Interestingly, Krajinovic has a good record at this tournament, having made the second round in each of the four times he’s played here. Once he also made the semifinal.

Rublev v Krajinovic Prediction and Tip

Rublev might not have had the greatest time over the last couple of tournaments but it shouldn’t deter him too much from doing his job here. Expecting a straight-set win.
