Towards the second half of the 2022 season Rune had found himself upping a gear like he had never done before and ended up with two more titles to go with his maiden one that he had won in Munich in May.
He broke into the top 10 of the rankings as a result of that performance.
Rune’s performances in 2023 have not quite been as good as they were at his best, in 2022. Sure, a win-loss record of 8-4 doesn’t make for a woeful reading but at the same time he would have loved to do a lot better than he has, especially at the Adelaide International and Rotterdam Open.
At the former, he was knocked out in the first round. At the latter, Rune had to retire from his second round match down 4-6, 0-4.

Shelton Falls in Round One at Delray Beach
Shelton surprised a lot of people including his own self when he made it all the way to the quarterfinals at the Australian Open earlier this year.
Unfortunately for him he lost a fighting four-setter to Tommy Paul there and on his return at the Delray Beach Open two weeks ago, the American did not quite turn up. Playing Marcos Giron in the first round, Shelton was sent packing 6-4, 6-4.
Earlier this season, Shelton had failed to qualify for the Adelaide International while exiting in the second round at the Auckland Open.
And facing Rune here in his opener, the world number 42 will hope he can exhibit the same kind of form that had seen him cruise so effortlessly at the season’s first major.

Rune, if fit, should have no concerns here. Sure, Shelton had a great time at the Australian Open, but till the time he can show some consistency – and that will happen with maturity and experience – we will have to go with the world number 10 winning this one.
