Diaz, Having a Mixed Season

Nuria Parrizas Diaz, age 31, has been hard at work. Even though she has not bagged that many big wins yet, she has built a fair amount of rhythm to her game – stemming from relentless participation on tour.

Her highlights include reaching the second round in Hobart (as a qualifier) and the third round in the Australian Open.

In the first case, she beat Yue Yuan, Xinyu Wang, and Mayar Sherif. In the latter, she delivered wins against fairly more prominent players like Beatriz Haddad Maia and Anastasia Potapova.

The Spaniard then lost her first-round bouts in Lyon and Linz while in Merida last week, she made it as far as round two after moving past Ana Konjuh in the opener.

Credit where it’s due, Diaz has two Challenger titles and 38 ITF finals to her name.

Wang in a Rut

Xiyu Wang of China is the current World No. 62 – 17 odd places above Diaz – but if she does not deliver victories soon, she is set to drop down further in the rankings.

Her tally is 1-4, and for what it is worth, it was in Merida last week where the 21-year-old bagged her first win of the season.

In the opener, she beat Alison Riske-Amritraj 7-5, 4-6, 7-6(1) – but only to lose to Kimberly Birrell next. Nonetheless, it did mark a turnaround from her first-round exits in Hua Hin, Melbourne, and Auckland.

Last season, Wang made a stunning leap in the rankings – jumping 80 odd places to make her top 50 debut on the heels of a respectable tally of 41-25 and three ITF runner-up feats.

Diaz v Wang Prediction and Tip

There is a gap in experience between the two players, Diaz, for her superior pedigree and relatively better form, will start as the favourite. Wang looks poised to put up a fight and make things difficult, but ultimately, Nuria should sail through to round two.
