Rebecca Marino v Fernanda Contreras Gomez Head to Head

Can Marino Score Her Second Main Draw Win?

It’s been a while since Rebecca Marino won a main draw match on the WTA Tour. That came in the opening week of the season and on the second day of January when she defeated Dalma Galfi in straight sets in the first round of the ASB Classic in Auckland.

Since then, Marino has been through a series of first-round exits. Her decision to play the Middle East swing probably was unwise given the level of playing field.

With so many of the world’s established stars playing in the Arabian peninsula, it meant the Canadian’s only way to get into the main draw was through qualifying. And for the case of Doha, it was three rounds, which left her completely gassed by the time she played Daria Kasatkina in the first round.

Last week, she lost in the qualifying rounds of the Dubai Tennis Championships to Rebeka Masarova in a third-set tiebreak.

Contreras Gomez Gets Wild Card Berth

Fernanda Contreras Gomez came close to inflicting a shock defeat to Alycia Parks in the first round of Merida this past week, taking a set from the young American, but went down in three sets in the end.

That battling performance has earned her a wild card in Monterrey where she will be chasing her first main draw win since Tokyo last September when she defeated Sofia Kenin in straight sets.

Outside a quarterfinal run on the clay courts of Cali, Contreras Gomez hasn’t done anything spectacular on the ITF Tour where she often plies her trade.

The Mexican is on a four-match losing streak and hasn’t tasted victory on hard courts in 2023. Could she snap that run at the expense of big-serving Canadian Rebecca Marino?

Marino v Contreras Gomez Prediction and Tip

Marino is in good touch having won a ton of qualifying matches in the Middle East. There is not much the Mexican wild card can do if the Canadian finds her range off that mammoth first serve.
