Nicolas Jarry v Juan Pablo Varillas Head to Head

They played plenty of times before with the current score being 3-3. The most recent one happened on in the Davis Cup last year and Varillas won that in three sets. All their matches came on clay.

Jarry Hits Peak at Rio Open

Nicolas Jarry hit his peak tennis at the Rio Open last week where even Carlos Alcaraz had trouble with him. Now, returning home to Chile, Jarry looks motivated to go all the way. It nearly happened in Rio but he couldn’t move past Alcaraz.

The Chilean is playing some of the best tennis he played in his career and that’s including the suspension. Playing back home should be good for him even though his last two appearances ended in the first round. I don’t think that will happen this time but the opponent is a tricky.

He lost three matches to him out of the six he played and Varillas certainly can turn it up on this surface. The serve might be crucial because Jarry has a great one and Santiago is rather high at 570 m which should help him.

Generally, he’s played really well, slightly better than Varillas recently which is what I think might be the crucial thing. A lot in tennis is down to confidence and I think he has more of that right now.

Good Start by Varrilas

Juan Pablo Varillas currently has a 9-6 record and he put forward some amazing performances to start the year. A clay player mostly, he produced some good results on hard courts in Australia too so it seems like he’s on the upswing.

Varillas played in Santiago in the past and his best result came in 2021 when he made the quarter-final. Last year was a first-round exit and that might happen again as he faces Jarry. The key to win for Varillas will be handling the serve.

If he can return the ball well he will give himself a chance in rallies and his aggressive play will always be a bonus in that situation. He’s one of the more cleaners clay hitters so if he happens to get his day, it should be a match that he can win.

He’s beaten Jarry in Santiago before although that was many years ago and on a challenger as well. He lost the second match in Santiago against Jarry.

Jarry v Varillas Prediction and Tip

I’ll back Jarry to win simply because he’s playing at home and he is looking very strong right now. It’s a bit risky as Varillas is really good but I trust him.
