Laslo Djere v Joao Sousa Head to Head

The pair have played each other once before, in Winston Salem last year on hard courts, Djere winning in three sets.

A Mixed Bag for Djere in 2023

Following on their meeting in Winston Salem, Djere went on to reach the final of that event, eventually losing in straight sets to Adrian Mannarino of France.

However, it has been more than two years since he last won a tournament, and that was on his favourite surface of clay in Sardinia.

Results so far in 2023 have been a mixed bag. He reached the second round in Pune, and the quarter-finals in Auckland, but Grigor Dimitrov ended his participation in the French Open at the second round stage.

Joining the South American awing in time for Buenos Aires, his progress was halted at the second round stage by Carlos Alvarez, who went on to lift the trophy.

And Rio last week ended in another second round defeat, this time at the hands of fellow Serb Dusan Lajovic.

Sousa’s Struggles for Form Continue

For a man once ranked as high as 28 in the world, and who has won four major titles in his career, including in Pune last year, it is depressing for Sousa to find himself currently so lowly ranked.

But it is a consequence of a sustained run of poor form that dates back to the second half of last season and has continued into this.

January set the tone, as he failed to qualify for Auckland and was beaten in the first round of the Australian Open.

The switch to South American clay brought temporary respite, as he reached the quarter-finals in Cordoba.

But results since then have had a depressing familiarity.

He was beaten in the first round in Buenos Aires by the Peruvian, Juan Pablo Varillas, and again last week in Rio by Hugo Dellien, taking just two games off the Bolivian.

Arguably, it was his biggest humiliation yet,

Djere v Sousa Prediction and Tip

Although results have been decidedly mixed for Djere so far, he will be confident of beating a man who has been struggling for form for some time, and whose confidence and morale will be low.
