Alex de Minaur v Rodrigo Pacheco Mendez Head to Head

The pair have never played each other before. This will be the first match between the 24 year old Australian, and the Mexican teenager, seven years his junior.

De Minaur Looking to Find Some Form Ahead of Masters’ Events

Despite the fact that he is still just 24, de Minaur has not fully fulfilled the potential that he showed when he first broke on the scene, and he will be keen to add to his collection of six titles this year, the most recent of which came in Eastbourne last year on grass.

However, he can take encouragement from the fact that he reached the fourth round of the Australian Open, his home Grand Slam for a second successive year, before losing in straight sets to the eventual champion, Novak Djokovic.

From there he travelled to Europe, entering Rotterdam where he reached the last eight before going down in three sets to Grigor Dimitrov.

More recently, he would have been disappointed by the manner of his second round defeat in Marseille to the world number 60, Benjamin Bonzi, losing in straight sets.

The Australian is looking to find some form ahead of the Sunshine Double Masters’ events.

Teenage Wildcard Mendez

Still just 17, Mendez mainly plays on the junior circuit – last year he reached the quarter-finals of the boys’ singles at both the Australian and French Open.

He made his main tour debut at the Los Cabos Open last August as a wildcard, but it proved to be a disappointing experience for him. Playing the Australian Rinky Hijikata, he was a set and two breaks down, when he was forced to retire with an injury.

So far this year, he has played in just two events on the ITF tour both of them on clay, and has just the one victory under his belt.

Organisers though have seen fit to give him a wildcard in Acapulco, and, whatever happens in his match with de Minaur, it is a learning opportunity for him.

De Minaur v Mendez Prediction and Tip

Whilst Mendez has the benefit of playing in home conditions and can count on vocal local support, the gulf between these two players in terms of world rankings is immense, and de Minaur will be the overwhelming favourite to win without any great difficulty.
