Cocciaretto Looking Confident

Elisabetta Cocciaretto is heading into the Monterrey Open on the back of a pretty decent start to the 2023 season.

She recently became the Italian No. 2 and made her top 50 debut, peaking at the #48 spot in January. She made that happen after reaching the final in Hobart International – her first WTA singles final – where she fell to Lauren Davis in straight sets. Nonetheless, she did beat the likes of Alize Cornet, Jasmine Paolini, Bernarda Pera, and Sofia Kenin.

That feat was sandwiched between two first-round exits in Auckland and Melbourne.

Cocciaretto’s next tournament post the Australian swing was in Merida, where she made it to the quarterfinal and became the new World No. 49.

The 22-year-old seems comfortable on the clay and hard courts, but her general preference seems to be the former. Last year, she made a massive leap in the rankings with a tally of 42-23 and five finals (four on clay).

Peterson in Great Form

Rebeca Peterson is arriving in Monterrey, sailing on cloud nine with a fair bit of momentum.

Last week in Merida, she reached her first WTA final in four years – as a qualifier. Her exploits entailed wins against Nadia Podoroska, Alycia Parks, Magda Linette, and Caty McNally in the main rounds. She lost to Camila Giorgi in the final in three sets.

Prior to that, the 27-year-old Swede was a runner-up in ITF Orlando.

The 99th-ranked Rebecca is competing in the tournament under the ‘special exempt’ category. She had a dull run last year (29-21, two finals) but this time around, she is well on her way to turning it around.

Cocciaretto v Peterson Prediction and Tip

Both players are coming off great runs, and there is not a lot that separates the two. Peterson, given her form, experience, and overall record, is the favourite for us. Expect her to give Elisabetta a run for her money.
