Borges Won the Monterrey Challenger Last Week

Nuno Borges heads to Acapulco in top form. He was crowned the champion at the Monterrey Challenger on Sunday.

Borges defeated Borna Gojo in straight sets in the final to lift his third Challenger title. As a result of that run in Monterrey, Borges climbed 18 places in the rankings to a career-high of no. 85 in the world.

The 26-year-old didn’t drop a set in the entire tournament, where he also defeated Daniel Altmaier (the world no. 95 last week) in the quarterfinal.

Borges is 8-3 overall this year and 8-2 from all his matches in February. He lost the opening round match at the Australian Open, where he was making his debut. He also lost his Davis Cup match against Jiri Lehecka.

In Delray Beach, he made it to the main draw after winning both his qualifying rounds. He then regiestered his first tour-level win of the season, beating Steve Johnson in the first round, but Miomir Kecmanovic ended his run in the Round of 16.

Playing in Acapulco for the first time, can he make an early impresson?

Chappell Comes Through Qualifiers

Nick Chappell will be playing in the main draw of an ATP event for the second time after he qualified for the tournament with a straight sets win over Australia’s Rubin Statham.

Ranked no. 432nd in the world, Chappell saved 2 of 2 break points and converted 4 of 16 to beat the world no. 509, 6-4, 6-0.

Chappell had earlier bounced back from a set down to shock world no. 131 Steve Johnson in the first qualifying round on Saturday. The American, who edged the first set was outplayed by the Canadian in the last two sets. Chappell won the contest 4-6, 6-1, 6-2.

The 30-year-old lefty, who made his main draw debut in Los Cabos last year, is 7-5 from all levels in 2023.

He won’t be expected to win but it will be interesting to see if he can put up a fight against Borges.

Borges v Chappell Prediction and Tip

Borges is in excellent form and he is also the more experienced of the two, particularly at the top level. He is a heavy favourite in this match.
