Giorgi Crowned Merida Champion

Camila Giorgi picked up her fourth WTA title by beating Rebecca Peterson in the final of the Merida Open last week.

An aggressive baseline player, the Italian needed three sets to edge past the Swede and lift her first title since winning the Canadian Open in 2021.

One of the highlights of Giorgi’s last week’s performance was the double bagel against second seed Sloane Stephens in the quarterfinals. She also defeated the fourth seed Kateřina Siniaková in the semifinals. All her first four wins came in straight sets. It was only in the final where she was given a tough fight by Peterson during the three-set contest.

Giorgi also made it to the third round of the Australian Open and the second round in Linz. Overall the 31-year-old is 8-4 this season.

Currently on a five-match winning run, Giorgi gained 22 places in the rankings following her WTA triumph. Can the world no. 48 keep the streak going on Tuesday?

Ruse Rallies Past Two Opponents in the Qualifiers

Elena-Gabriela Ruse qualified for the main draw following back-to-back come-from-behind wins in the qualifying round.

The world no. 160 Ruse first defeated Simona Waltert 6-7, 6-0, 6-2 in the first qualifying round and then knocked out Jesika Malečková 5-7, 6-3, 6-1 in the second qualifying round.

With the two wins, the 25-year-old is now 10-5 for the season, across levels. Most of those wins came in the qualifying rounds. Australian Open is the only tournament where she fell in the qualifiers. In other tournaments, she won both her qualifying matches in Auckland, Abu Dhabi, Doha and Monterrey.

Ruse didn’t have much of an impact last year either, when she finished with a 17-23 record across levels.

Ruse reached two clay finals in 2021, winning in Hamburg and finishing runner-up in Palermo. Those two remain her only appearances in a WTA final.

Can she put up a strong display against the Merida champion?

Giorgi v Ruse Prediction and Tip

Form and experience both are in Giorgi’s favour. Expect the Italian to begin another tournament with a win.
