Carlos Alcaraz v Mackenzie McDonald Head to Head

Two previous meetings between these players, both of which came last year and in hardcourt competitions and Alcaraz has won them both.

Alcaraz Hoping Injury Stays Away

At the time of writing this, Alcaraz is still very much a part of the Mexican Open draw but that could change very quickly and at the 11th hour.

And that’s because of the injury that Alcaraz suffered at the last tournament he played in, in Rio. Taking on Cameron Norrie in the final and leading him by a set and a break, Alcaraz was hit by a leg injury and struggled through the rest of the match that ended in a loss.

Alcaraz has already had a few injuries in his short career – with an abdominal one that kept him out last season and another in his hamstring that forced him to miss the Australian Open this year.

And now this latest leg injury could be a huge cause for concern but as things stand at this very moment, his name is very much in the draw which could be an indicator things might not be that bad.

That shift from clay to hardcourt could also be a concern for Alcaraz, especially because of the leg issue. All in all, it might be an intriguing few hours ahead leading into the encounter.

McDonald Coming off Delray Beach Semifinal

McDonald’s best showing of the season came about a week ago at the Delray Beach Open where he reached the semifinal before losing to the eventual winner Taylor Fritz.

Wins over Taro Daniel, Yoshihito Nishioka and Michael Mmoh took him to the last four stage where he fell fighting to Fritz. Before that, he had also made the third round at the Australian Open in what was another decent showing.

Interestingly McDonald has already experienced playing a top-notch player who has suffered a fitness concern during the match. Rafael Nadal had struggled through most part of his second round match at the Australian Open earlier this year against McDonald and the American had taken full advantage of that.

Can he make use of the possibility that Alcaraz might not be fully fit here and make his opponent fight for every point?

Alcaraz v McDonald Prediction and Tip

No surprises that while Alcaraz is a favourite here, it’s not one of those heavily favoured ones for him. We reckon one can go with the risky option of McDonald putting one past Alcaraz here.
