Taylor Fritz v Denis Shapovalov Head to Head

There have been seven previous meetings including a Davis Cup encounter between these two players and Fritz has won just two of them. They faced off twice last year as well with both winning one match apiece.

Fritz Gets Past Isner in Tiebreaker-Less Match!

When it’s John Isner at the other end, you know there is always that tie-breaker in the offing. Breaks of serves are rare but one in every set are almost improbable.

In fact coming into this encounter, Isner had played seven matches on tour this season and each of them had at least one tie-breaker involved. Some had even three – like Isner’s finals loss to Wu Yibing in Dallas.

Which is why, Fritz’s 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 win over Isner in the opener here was a shocker. Isner broke his opponent once in the first set, and Fritz retaliated with a break of serve in the next two sets too.

What that did was to give Fritz his 13th win of the year to go with his three defeats but more importantly one which gave him his fifth successive victory and first since winning the Delray Beach Open title.

Can he now overcome his poor record against Shapovalov at this level?

Shapovalov Scrapes Past Kecmanovic

Much like Fritz, even Shapovalov needed three sets to get past his opening round opponent as well. Shapovalov defeated Miomir Kecmanovic in a match that seemed to ebb and flow as it went along.

There were 10 breaks of serves in this opener, with Shapovalov blowing up a 3-0 lead in the first set to lose it in a tie-breaker and then retaliating with three breaks in a row to bagel Kecmanovic in the second.

The third looked to be going to play for Shapovalov when he went 3-1 up and then held on to serve for the match at 5-4. He was broken to love but retaliated with another break before serving it out off the second chance he got.

Overall, however, Shapovalov has shown a lack of consistency this season which will be bothersome. He had a third round appearance at the Australian Open but followed that up with three successive losses coming into this tournament.

And now up against the world number five, things might not be looking very rosy for him.

Fritz v Shapovalov Prediction and Tip

Fritz will be a heavy favourite here and despite Shapovalov’s obvious quality, we could see the American find a way to get past him in two.
