Casper Ruud v Taro Daniel Head to Head

Their only previous outing came on the Challenger circuit way back in 2016 and Ruud had won that one on clay in straight sets to lift the title.

Ruud Scrapes Past Andreozzi

Much like has been the case throughout the rest of the season, Ruud struggled in his first round encounter here as well before coming through in a brutal three-setter.

Ruud, who had come into this tournament on the back of just two wins from five matches, overcame Guido Andreozzi, a 342nd-ranked player in a final set tie-breaker to limp into the second round. The match lasted nearly three hours.

Things looked like they were going to be a struggle even early in the first set and despite Ruud going on to turn around a break down twice in it, he looked far from comfortable. So much so, he lost the second set and then fell a break down in the third.

It was a quick break back at that point that helped and while he struggled to get past Andreozzi in the remaining games of the set, he managed to carve out a 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (2) win in the end.

He will hope to get into a better rhythm in the second round.

Daniel Shocker for Wolf

It was expected to be a routine start for JJ Wolf in the first round this tournament. As it turned out, the routine did happen but for his opponent, the 125th-ranked Daniel who managed a straight-set win over his American opponent.

In a match lasting an hour and 47 minutes, Daniel registered a 6-4, 6-4 victory despite getting broken once apiece in both sets.

Daniel was quick off the blocks, racing off to a 5-2 lead in the first set before losing his serve but that did not hurt his cause too much. In the second, there were three successive breaks of serves which led to Daniel taking a 2-1 lead and he held on to his serve after that, facing not a single break-point.

If that’s the kind of serving he can maintain, one that saw him win 71% of his first serve points, even the struggling Ruud could find it very tough.

Ruud v Daniel Prediction and Tip

Ruud is 3/10 to win this but again, his form has been so dodgy it’s not very easy to give him the nod, especially not in straight sets till it gets to a level where he is in some sort of a rhythm. Could see a longish match too.
