Roberto Carballes Baena v Yannick Hanfmann Head to Head

This will be their first tour level meeting. They met once at a lower level tournament and that match was won by Hanfmann.

Carballes Baena Advances as Taberner Retires

Roberto Carballes Baena made it to the second round in Santiago after his opening round opponent Carlos Taberner retired from their contest.

Carballes Baena had dropped just 12 points while taking the first set 6-1 before the lucky loser decided to pull out of the contest.

With the win Carballes Baena is now into the second round of a tournament for just the third time this year. The Spaniard had won his first round matches in Pune and Buenos Aires. But he could not go beyond the second round in either of those two tournaments.

The 29-year-old has an overall record of 3-5 this year. A win on Wednesday will match his previous best in Santiago. He was a quarterfinalist in 2021, which remains his best effort so far in the Chile Open.

Hanfmann Trounces Martinez

Yannick Hanfmann continued his impressive run in Santiago as the German handed defending champion Pedro Martinez a straight sets drubbing in the first round.

Hanfmann, who defeated Italy’s Andrea Pellegrino 6-1, 6-1 and Spain’s Carlos Taberner 6-4, 6-1 in the two qualifying rounds respectively, needed an hour and 32 minutes to beat Martinez 6-2, 6-0.

The world no. 153 served 9 aces, saved both the break points that he faced and capitalised on 5 of 16 breaking chances that he created during the match.

With the win Hanfmann is now 11-6 across levels this season. However, this was the 31-year-old German’s firs main draw win of the season on the tour. He had lost the openers at the Australian Open and the Buenos Aires Open after winning all his qualifying rounds in both those tournaments.

A six-time Challenger Tour champion, Hanfmann is playing in Santiago for the second time. Last year, he went down to Martinez in the quarterfinal. He has got his revenge over the Soaniard this year. Now, can he defeat another Spaniard on Wednesday and reach a second consecutive quarterfinal in Chile?

Carballes Baena v Hanfmann Prediction and Tip

Although Carballes Baena is the higher ranked player, form favours Hanfmann. He has played plenty of matches this year, although most of them at the qualifying or Challenger levels, but has tasted success at those levels. So the German is a slight favourite in this contest.
