Sloane Stephens v Heather Watson Head to Head

This rivalry goes all the way back to 2010 when these two had faced off on the ITF circuit. Overall, which includes both the tours and qualifiers, they have met eight times and Watson leads 5-3.

In the last seven years though, they have met just one and it came at the 2021 Indian Wells Open where Stephens won a tight, three-setter.

Stephens Wins Her Third Match of the Season

In a highly forgettable season so far, Stephens has won just three matches in 2023. The third of those wins came in the first round here as she moved past fellow American Taylor Townsend in straight sets to set up a round of 16 meeting with Watson.

Stephens was on court for an hour and 23 minutes as she carved out a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Townsend.

Facing just two break-points in the encounter, Stephens saved them both while getting the better of her opponent’s serve on three separate occasions. And where she also did well was her first serves which she won 78% of the time.

The win should do her a world of good too given it came on the back of a 2-4 win-loss record for the season. More vitally it also came after Stephens had lost her previous match 6-0, 6-0.

She now has a chance to make it successive wins for the second time in a row after having reached the quarterfinal at Merida Open as well.

Watson Sends Kovinic Packing

It took Watson nearly two hours alright but in the end she came through against Danka Kovinic in straight sets. The Brit struggled with her serve for most part of the first set and the early part of the second before defeating Kovinic 7-6 (2), 6-4 and reaching second round.

This marks just the second time this season that Watson has won an opening round encounter on the WTA level this season.

This has also been down to her fall in the rankings which has forced Watson to feature on the ITF circuit with the Brit having come into this tournament on the back of an ITF tournament final appearance.

Here in Austin, Watson lost her serve thrice but broke back four times to claim the second round spot against an opponent who has been inconsistent on court throughout her recent past.

Stephens v Watson Prediction and Tip

While Stephens is 2/5 to win this, it’s never easy to back her given her rather strange form fluctuations. What we think might be in store for us is a three-setter.
