Vekic Enjoying her Resurgence

World No. 31 Donna Vekic is having a superb season, as she finds her way to her former and eventually, a better version of herself as a player.

Having struggled with form and injuries over the last two seasons, 2023 is all coming up quite nicely for the Croat. She is 10-2 at the moment and has picked up a little over $500,000 in prize money.

Some may say that lady luck has also been on her side; in Monterrey, she played Lesia Tsurenko in the opener, but the match didn’t go to completion. It ended 2-6, 5-0 with Lesia retiring.

Before this, Donna was a quarterfinalist in Linz and the Australian Open, losing to the giants like Maria Sakkari and Aryna Sabalenka.

A former top 20 player with 10 career singles finals, she is certainly the player to beat in the tournament.

Navarro beats Jeanjean

Emma Navarro started her campaign with a convincing 6-4, 6-2 win over Leolia Jeanjean. The match lasted for a little over an hour, with the American winning 75% of the points behind the first serve and converting four out of five break points.

With this, the 21-year-old also bagged her first WTA victory of the season. Up until now, she was engaged on the ITF Tour – with a fair amount of success. Most notably, she won the ITF Naples and followed it with a runner-up feat at ITF Vero Beach.

That was in January, with her next tournament being the ITF Irapuato in Mexico. There, the current World No. 134 ended up losing to Raluka Serban of Cyprus in the first round itself in straight sets.

Last season, Navarro clocked in an impressive tally of 31-18. She is also a three-time Grand Slam finalist on the junior tour (two doubles, one singles).

Vekic v Navarro Prediction and Tip

Vekic’s superior experience and pedigree make her the heavy favourite. While Navarro can make things difficult, it is hard to imagine her dismiss the Croat and make it to the quarterfinal.
