World No. 100 Anna Karolina Schmiedlova just posted her second WTA win of the season – once again in style.
This time, she upset the number two seed Marie Bouzkova 6-4, 6-2 in an hour and 46 minutes. Her last similar victory in a main draw came in the Australian Open against the 21st seed Martina Trevisan in straight sets.
The Slovak has been struggling a lot with her form over the last few seasons, struggling to deliver big-ticket wins and trophies. She has spent time outside the top 80, with her last WTA singles final coming in 2019. Last season, she was 34-30 with her highlight being an ITF runner-up feat she accomplished in Slovakia.
Before coming to Monterrey, Schmiedlova featured in Hua Hin and Merida but lost her opening fixtures to lower-ranked players like Anastasia Zakharova and Aliona Bolsova.

Dolehide Stuns Niemeier
Caroline Dolehide, ranked #206, stunned the rising German star Jule Niemeier into submission with a resounding 6-1, 6-0 win. It was an absolute rout, with the match lasting for just 52 minutes. The American won 81% of the points on the first serve and won six out of 10 possible breakpoints.
This marks a rare win for the 24-year-old, who spent the year so far in the chasms of qualifying matches and the ITF circuit. Up until now, she had not bagged a main-draw win.
Caroline started as a qualifier here, beating Laura Pigossi and Marcela Zacarias en route to the main draw.
As a doubles player, Dolehide has done a whole lot better. She is a three-time Grand Slam semifinalist and a quarterfinalist in the 2023 Aus Open Women’s Doubles. Perhaps, she can leverage some of that experience into a positive outcome against Anna?
