Francisco Cerundolo v Tomas Etcheverry Head to Head

While they have never faced off at the highest level, these two players have met six times on the Challenger and Futures circuit. Cerundolo leads 4-2 with all of those matches having come on clay.

Cerundolo Opens with a Bye

Cerundolo’s career-best ranking is 24th in the world and this year he has fallen a few spots from his season-high of 29th. That has been down to his inability to go deeper into tournaments.

The Argentine had a first round bye at Cordoba but fell in the quarterfinals soon after to Federico Coria. He then defeated Yannick Hanfmann and Jaume Munar in Buenos Aires before going down to Bernabe Zapata Miralles in the last eight.

And then facing the same opponent in the second round at the Rio Open, Cerundolo failed to extract any revenge.

These are matches Cerundolo will need to start winning if he wants to break into and remain in the top 20 of the world rankings. Because the sterner tests against some of the top-tier clay-courters lie ahead but before that he needs to sharpen his claws winning more consistently against players ranked lower than 50.

Like his opponent in this one.

Etcheverry Goes Past Fognini in Opener

Etcheverry took his time in the second set but in the end came through in straight sets against Fabio Fognini in his opener.

Needing an hour and 49 minutes in his first round match, Etcheverry registered a 6-1, 7-6 (1) win over Fognini to carve out a place in the round of 16.

Having come into the encounter with just three main draw wins from the eight he had played, Etcheverry traded service breaks with Fognini in the first three games of the match. From that point on, however, it was one-way traffic in his favour as he clinched the opening set in 37 minutes.

The second set was more hard-fought with both players dropping their serve once apiece. It was in the tie-breaker that followed that Etcheverry found his serving range and eased his way through to the next stage.

Things are likely to get a lot tougher against his countryman come the round two.

Cerundolo v Etcheverry Prediction and Tip

Cerundolo starts off a favourite here and we would lap up the 8/13 odds that are on offer for his win. If completely fit, he would be our pick to ease his way through to the second round.
