Sherif Advances as Osorio Withdraws

World no. 53 Mayar Sherif advanced to the second round in Monterrey after her first round opponent Camila Osorio retired with an injury in the second set.

Sherif had taken the first set in the tiebreak and was up 4-2 in the second when the Colombian retired from the contest.

The Egyptian is now 3-5 in 2023. It is just the second time this year that she has made it past the first round of a tour-level event. She had won her opening round match in Lyon against Ana Konjuh but had fallen in the second round to Linda Noskova.

In her other main draw matches this season, Sherif lost in the first round in Hobart, the Australian Open and Merida.

This is her third appearance in Monterrey and she has now matched her previous best, achieved last year. Can the 2022 Emilia Romagna Open champion cross the second round hurdle and reach a maiden quarterfinal in Monterrey?

Wang Eases Past Vickery

Xinyu Wang eased into the second round with a straight sets win over American qualifier Sachia Vickery.

Wang saved 4 of 5 break points and converted 4 of 6 to beat the world no. 186, 6-3, 6-4 in an hour and 15 minutes. Thanks to the victory, Wang improved her season record to 11-7.

After falling in the opening round of her season opener in Auckland, she made it to the main draw in Hobart as a lucky loser and then won her first two rounds to the reach the last eight stage.

She bettered that performance in Hua Hin, reaching the semifinals of that tournament. Last month, she also reached the quarterfinals of an ITF event in Irapuato.

Having got off to a good start, can Wang continue to impress in the second round?

Sherif v Wang Prediction and Tip

The world no. 65 Wang is a better player on hard courts, while Sherif tends to prefer clay over hard surface. Wang is also in better form and so she will be a slight favourite against the seventh seed.
