Andrey Rublev v Alexander Zverev Head to Head

This is an old rivalry which has seen five matches played between 2016 and 2021 and Zverev has won every single time. Four of these matches came in hardcourt competitions including the final of the 2021 Cincinnati Open which was the last time they met.

Rublev Continues March with van de Zandschulp Win

After struggling in the two tournaments he featured in immediately after the Australian Open, Rublev looks to be coming into his own in Dubai. Having won the title here last season, Rublev marched into the semifinal this season with a straight-set victory over Botic van de Zandschulp.

Rublev was on court for an hour and 55 minutes to register a 6-3, 7-6 (3) win after having frittered away three match-points in the second set.

Having broken van de Zandschulp early in the first set, Rublev eased to a one set lead and looked to be in line to win it with another break of serve in the second set. Serving for the match at 5-4 in the second, however, Rublev failed to complete the win and needed to go through a tie-breaker before ending his opponent’s run.

This follows a stiff win in the second round against Alejandro Davidovich Fokina where he overcame a first set deficit before needing two tie-breakers to get past his opponent. Can Rublev now win his first match against Zverev?

Zverev Continues Improved Form

Since returning from his injury layoff earlier this season, Zverev’s struggles have been well-chronicled but here in Dubai it looks like he might have turned a corner.

Coming into the ATP Dubai on the back of six defeats from nine matches this season, Zverev finally doubled his win count for the year with a quarterfinal victory over Lorenzo Sonego.

And while Sonego did try to put up a show, it was Zverev who came through in straight sets. In a match lasting an hour and 53 minutes, Zverev won 7-5, 6-4 to make it to the semifinal where he takes on an opponent he has beaten on five previous occasions.

Zverev, who had scraped past Jiri Lehecka in the first round and then defeated Christopher O’Connell in the second, improved his first serve percentage to 82% and won 84% of those points in this quarterfinal. And while he faced six break-points, Zverev saved them all.

With his confidence returning to near-previous levels, this could turn out to be an interesting battle against a top-10 player.

Rublev v Zverev Prediction and Tip

Rublev is 1/1 to win this which could be down to his own form this month. But Zverev can be tested as was evidenced in the first round and that means this could be a close one, that could even go into a third set.
