Katie Volynets v Peyton Stearns Head to Head

There have been no previous meetings between these two at the highest level. In 2018, they did play each other on the ITF circuit and Volynets had won that match in a hardcourt competition.

Volynets Shocks Potapova from 5-0 Down in Decider

Volynets is 21 years old and broke into the top 100 on the WTA Rankings only recently. And by the looks of things, she can be expected to continue improving her ranking as she features in the quarterfinal at this event.

This follows her second shock victory of the tournament, a bigger one than the first.

Having made it to the third round at the Australian Open and the second round in Merida last week, Volynets overcame Alison Riske despite starting out as a 11/10 underdog in opener here.

And in the second round, she went a step ahead by overturning a first set loss against the 3/10 odds on favourite Anastasia Potapova. She went on to win 5-7, 6-2, 7-5 after being down 5-0 in the final set.

Volynets will have the confidence to take a step further here.

Stearns Makes it 18-2 for the Season

Much like Volynets, Stearns was also at her career-best WTA ranking coming into this tournament – about 45 places behind her American counterpart though. And like Volynets she has also stormed into the quarterfinals to give herself a good chance of adding more to her ranking points.

Stearns, who had featured in four ITF-level tournaments this season, has already won 18 matches to go with a mere two defeats. And the last of those wins came against Mirjam Bjorklund whom she defeated 6-3, 7-5 to move into the last eight.

Having earlier overcome Katie Boulter in a three-set thriller, Stearns lived up to her 2/5 favourites odds to carve out a win in an hour and 50 minutes.

Can she now get past her fellow countrywoman who has also shown all season what she is capable, albeit at the highest level?

Volynets v Stearns Prediction and Tip

Interestingly, Volynets starts off as a second favourite in this one at 6/5 and we would like to go with that despite what Stearns has done all season because of her experience at the highest level. We could also see three sets in this one.
