Claire Liu v Alison Van Uytvanck Head to Head

Claire Liu played plenty of matches this year but the score of 6-8 is less than impressive. She improved quite a bit last year so many assumed that her start this year would be a strong one continuing her improvement. It’s not been the case but Indian Wells will give her a decent chance to change that.
Playing at home in conditions that suit her place Liu as the favourite in this round-one matchup. It’s a tricky one against a serious opponent who doesn’t give away much so she’ll need careful. Last year in Indian Wells, Liu reached the second round losing to Coco Gauff in a close match.
The American is a very solid counterpuncher who gets to many balls and the bounce here should suit her in that regard. She doesn’t have too much power in her game but can hit some incredible angles as she tracks down the balls around the court.
I expect her to keep the rallies longer which doesn’t suit her opponent at all. Combined with the crowd support it should give her a decent chance.

Van Uytvanck Solid as Ever
If you had to use one word to describe Alison Van Uytvanck it would be solid. She’s always been solid and even now, she’s very solid. A 5-4 record overall gives her a decent chance to win this matchup. She’s reached the second round in Indian Wells a couple of times including last year.
Generally, it’s not a court she likes to play too much because the ball jumps rather high and it’s far away from the indoor conditions she prefers. She moves well and serves well so in that regard she should not have too many problems.
Playing against a quick counter-puncher will be tough because Liu will most likely get to all the balls and sent plenty back. She will need to attack if she hopes to win and while that is something she does well, it’s not quite the same indoors and outdoors.
If she manages to keep the pressure high then I expect her to do well in this matchup but if she allows Liu too much space she’s in trouble.
Liu v Van Uytvanck Prediction and Tip
So this is a matchup that could easily go to three sets and if it doesn’t we’ll probably see two close ones. I lean Liu as the winner but recommend the over as the safer option.
