Madison Brengle v Laura Siegemund Head to Head

The pair have played each other five times before, although not since 2019, and Siegemund leads their head to head series by four matches to one.

The German won in Charlottesville in 2010, in Pelham four years later, and at the Madrid Open in 2016.

Brengle’s solitary victory came on grass in Rosmalen a few months after that, but Siegemund won their last encounter in Hobart.

Brengle Has a Poor Record in Indian Wells

Brengle has a poor record in Indian Wells, having made her debut here as long ago as 2008. In the intervening period, she has never been further than the second round, a stage she has reached on four occasions.

In fact, her record in WTA 1000 events generally, is nothing to write home about. Her third round appearances in Dubai and Miami last year are the high water mark in that regard.

The American will not be filled with confidence she can improve on that this year after a difficult start to the season.

She was beaten in the first round in her first four tournaments of 2023, including the Australian Open, and only broke her duck with a first round victory in Linz.

Three matches were won in qualifying for Doha, but she promptly lost in the first round again.

Most recently, Brengle did beat the qualifier Louisa Chirico in the first round of Austin, but then lost in three sets to the eventual winner, Marta Kostyuk.

Siegemund Makes it Through the Qualifiers

As she has got older, Siegemund has increasingly begun to concentrate on doubles, having won Grand Slam titles at the US Open in 2019 and 2020, and at the Miami Open last year.

However, in her prime she was a fine singles player in her own right, having won two WTA titles, reached a French Open quarter-final and been ranked inside the top 30.

Her record, though, in Indian Wells is even more modest than that of Brengle’s – one second round appearance in 2016 is the best she has managed.

She has at least earned herself the opportunity to improve on that by coming through the qualifying competition, first beating the American Coco Vandeweghe in straight sets.

Whilst that victory was relatively routine, the same cannot be said of her encounter with the Slovak Anna Karolina Schmiedlova, which took three sets and the best part of three hours before Siegemund could finally claim victory.

Brengle v Siegemund Prediction and Tip

Neither woman has a good victory in Indian Wells, and, given their recent form, anybody expecting this match to be a classic is likely to be disappointed.

However, playing in home conditions and before a local crowd should give the American some sort of an edge.
